The talking points
Gravenberch's red card hands City the Anfield win
For an hour Liverpool held on. The first half was a scrappy affair of half-chances and fouls, and Liverpool, short of players through injury, were level when Ryan Gravenberch was shown a second yellow for a challenge on Jérémy Doku. What followed was the end of the contest. Erling Haaland, Doku and Rayan Cherki all scored in a 16-minute spell as City took the game apart.
Enzo Maresca said his side struggled before the break and changed things at half-time, and the man advantage did the rest. He also spoke about the atmosphere, saying City had to "deal with their noise". Doku's goal, a curler from outside the box, was the pick of the three, and it came from the player Gravenberch had fouled.
The table now looks lopsided. City are the only side in the Premier League with a perfect record, six wins from six, 18 points and a goal difference of plus 11, and they lead Arsenal by three. Liverpool are ninth on nine points. The AI had a 2-2 here.
Bayern are denied by their own captain and four offside flags
Seconds after kick-off at Augsburg, Manuel Neuer's attempted clearance struck Robin Fellhauer and the forward ran through to score. It was the sort of mistake that can wreck an afternoon, and for a while it threatened to. Bayern had 29 shots, hit the woodwork, and saw four goals ruled out for offside. Nathaniel Brown levelled in the 80th minute from a Harry Kane assist, and Serge Gnabry hit the post soon after.
Vincent Kompany called it "an emotional rollercoaster" and defended Neuer, saying the goalkeeper is experienced enough to carry on. He also pointed out that both goals Bayern conceded came from their own errors. The club's sporting director agreed that they were self-inflicted and said the draw, even so, was deserved.
The two dropped points matter in a tight race. Bayern are third on 11 points, two behind Freiburg and Dortmund, who both have 13. The AI had Bayern winning 3-0.
Carrick is booed as United fail to finish off ten-man Spurs
Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 73rd minute and the game looked won when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later for a headbutt on Luke Shaw, confirmed by VAR. United had more than ten minutes with an extra man and could not add a second. Dominic Solanke headed in a Sandro Tonali cross in the 92nd minute to rescue a point.
Michael Carrick said afterwards that the result "hurts a lot" and admitted he had regrets about not killing the game off. He also said the boos from the Old Trafford crowd hurt. United have six points from six games, their worst start to a league season since 1986-87, and sit 13th. Spurs, under Roberto De Zerbi, are winless and 19th on three points, all from draws.
The pressure is on Carrick before a Champions League trip to Atlético, and the late goal has made a bad start worse. The AI had a 2-2 here.
Coventry end a 25-year wait at home
Jack Rudoni scored a penalty in the sixth minute and Sidiki Cherif doubled the lead three minutes after the restart. Sven Botman pulled one back for Newcastle on 70, but Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored in the last ten minutes to make it 4-1. It was Coventry's first home win in the top flight for 25 years, and it lifted them to 14th on six points.
The numbers say Newcastle should not have lost. They had 19 shots to Coventry's nine, according to Sofascore, but the early penalty forced them to chase, and they conceded eight goals in their last two Premier League games, both of them 4-1 defeats away from home. Head coach Matthias Jaissle apologised to the travelling fans and called the result "punishment in this league", while arguing it was not "the worst game". Frank Lampard praised Coventry's energy.
Newcastle are 11th on eight points. The AI had Newcastle winning 2-1.
Rayo v Athletic is called off after a fans' protest
The match at Vallecas was abandoned in the first half with the score 0-0. Home supporters protesting against club president Raúl Martín Presa threw paper planes and small balls onto the pitch, play was stopped more than once, and referee José María Sánchez Martínez called it off on police advice. LaLiga said it strongly condemned behaviour that puts safety at risk.
Athletic said on their website that the league had told them the game could not be completed on Saturday or Sunday. No new date has been confirmed. Neither side's league position in this report depends on it: Rayo are 13th and Athletic 10th in the table we hold.
- Rayo Vallecano v Athletic: abandoned
Player of the weekend
Anthony Caci, Mainz. He scored in the 33rd and 42nd minutes to drag his side back from 2-0 down against Leverkusen, and Mainz had 23 shots to 16 and the better expected goals in a game they lost 4-3. Moussa Diaby's curler, his first Bundesliga goal in three years, and Benedict Hollerbach's 92nd-minute reply completed a seven-goal afternoon, but it was Caci who kept Mainz in it.
Under pressure
Michael Carrick. Six points from six, United's worst start to a league season since 1986-87, a draw thrown away against ten men and boos from the home fans. A Champions League night at Atlético is the next test.

The AI's corner
Of the 47 finished league matches from Friday to Monday, the AI got 5 bullseyes, 23 more right results and 19 wrong. The bullseyes were Barcelona 3-0 Getafe, Inter 3-0 Parma, Atalanta 3-1 Venezia, Málaga 1-1 Espanyol and Troyes 0-2 Marseille, and the last of those was its best call, an away win called to the goal. Its worst miss was Leipzig against Frankfurt, which it saw as a 2-2 and finished 6-0. It also backed Bayern to win 3-0 at Augsburg and had a 2-2 at Anfield. Every pick is at predisportshq.com/predictions.
