Champions League round-up: PSG sink City, Madrid stun Roma and Inter lose to Brugge

PSG led City 3-0 inside 32 minutes at the Etihad, Real Madrid scored three corner goals in seven minutes to win 4-3 in Rome, and Inter are pointless after Nicolò Tresoldi's hat-trick for Club Brugge.

The talking points

PSG kill the game in 19 minutes at the Etihad

Man City never found their shape after the first goal. Désiré Doué scored in the 13th minute, Ousmane Dembélé made it 2-0 in the 15th and Vitinha added a third in the 32nd. Enzo Maresca said his side had conceded nothing before the opening goal, but the quick second left his players losing their positions and the distance between them. "We are sorry for the first half for sure," he said.

City were far better after the break. Erling Haaland scored in the 53rd and 75th minutes and the home side hit the woodwork twice, but Maghnes Akliouche made it 4-2 for PSG. Maresca felt City "deserved more" and said Luis Enrique told him afterwards that PSG had been quite lucky.

It leaves the champions top of the table on goal difference and City 17th with three points. They have a league game on Saturday, and Maresca said his focus is on continuing their run there.

Madrid win in Rome with three goals from corners

José Mourinho's return to the Olimpico looked like going wrong when Donyell Malen made it 3-1 to Roma in the 57th minute. Marten de Roon had put Roma ahead in the 20th minute, Kylian Mbappé equalised five minutes later, and Malen scored twice after the break.

Then Madrid's bench won it. Carlos Espí tapped in a rebound in the 83rd minute, Endrick headed in two minutes later and Antonio Rüdiger volleyed the winner in the 90th. Every one of the late goals came from an Arda Güler corner, a set piece pattern Roma could not solve once they were tired.

Mourinho blamed himself for the first half. "The first half was the coach's fault," he said, and he admitted Gian Piero Gasperini had outsmarted him before his half-time changes. At the final whistle he said he has the utmost respect for Roma. Madrid stay in the top eight with six points from two games; Roma are 25th with one.

Tresoldi's hat-trick leaves Inter without a point

Inter dominated the shots and still lost 4-3 at San Siro. Nicolò Tresoldi scored a penalty in the 30th minute, after Carlos Forbs was fouled by Hakan Çalhanoğlu, then added goals in the 63rd and 74th. Lautaro Martínez pulled Inter level in the 44th minute and made it 3-2 in the 81st, but Romeo Vermant put Club Brugge 4-2 up in the 87th after a mix-up between Josep Martínez and his defenders. Ange-Yoan Bonny scored in stoppage time.

Cristian Chivu took the blame. "I am the first one responsible because I cannot find the right balance," he said, and he said his side missed two big chances at the start of the second half and then lost its cool once Brugge went 2-1 up. Inter are 29th with no points from two games. Next up is Shakhtar at home on 21 October.

Olise's red card costs Bayern two points

Bayern trailed 2-0 at Viking at half-time, after Gianni Stensness scored in the 2nd minute and Peter Christiansen in the 38th. Harry Kane then scored penalties in the 54th and 60th minutes, and Luis Díaz put the visitors 3-2 up in the 71st.

Two minutes later Michael Olise was sent off for a second yellow card, after he threw the ball at Viking captain Zlatko Tripić. Herman Haugen equalised for Viking in the 90th minute against ten men. Vincent Kompany called the red card "incredibly stupid", and Olise now misses the visit of Arsenal on 21 October.

Yoro's red card sinks Carrick's United in Madrid

Atlético scored after 47 seconds, Pablo Barrios finishing the move, and Manchester United spent the night chasing. Carrick said afterwards that the start made the game harder, but that his side grew into it and had four big chances.

The match turned on Leny Yoro's straight red card in the 74th minute for bringing down Jonathan David, a decision Sky Sports called soft after an on-field review. Ademola Lookman, a substitute, scored the second in the 79th. Simeone said Atlético had been lucky to start so well. United are winless in five games.

Player of the week

Nicolò Tresoldi of Club Brugge. Three goals at San Siro, one of them a penalty, in a game Inter dominated for shots. Carlos Forbs deserves a mention for winning the penalty.

Under pressure

Michael Carrick. United are winless in five games after the defeat in Madrid, sit 13th in the league phase with three points, and Carrick said the opening goal left his side with a harder night. Next up is Como away on 21 October.
